Open the calculatorBuilt for the way colleges count.
College GPA is credit-weighted on the 4.0 scale: each course’s grade points (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, …) times its credit hours, summed, divided by total credits. Most colleges use an unweighted 4.0 scale, so course difficulty doesn’t add bonus points.
Worked example
A (4.0), B (3.0), A− (3.7), B+ (3.3), each worth 3 credits: 42 quality points ÷ 12 credits = 3.50.
How to use the college gpa calculator
Enter this term’s courses
Each course’s credit hours and letter grade, straight from your registration or transcript.
Keep +/- on for most colleges
College transcripts usually record A−, B+ and so on. Turn “+/- grades” off only if your school uses whole letters.
Leave weighting off
A standard college GPA is unweighted — no Honors/AP bonus.
Add your prior GPA for cumulative
Turn on “Include my prior GPA” and enter your prior cumulative GPA and credits to roll this term into your overall college GPA.
Term GPA vs cumulative GPA
Your term GPA covers one semester; your cumulative college GPA covers everything. The more credits you’ve earned, the less any single term moves the cumulative number — use the cumulative GPA calculator to see by how much.
Major GPA is a subset
Some programs track a separate major GPA using only courses in your major. Enter just those courses here to estimate it; follow your department’s list of which courses count.
Pass/fail, withdrawals and repeats
Pass/fail courses usually earn credit without affecting GPA; withdrawals (W) typically don’t count; repeated courses may replace or average the original grade. Include only what your registrar counts toward GPA.
