Midterm Exam Calculator
Find the midterm score you need for your target grade, and see how much a midterm can move your grade. Enter your current grade, the midterm’s weight and your goal.
Your calculator is getting ready.
It runs separately so your grades stay away from advertising. If it doesn’t appear, open it directly.
Open the calculatorKnow the midterm score to aim for.
A midterm is just a weighted exam. Required midterm score = (target − current grade × (1 − midterm weight)) ÷ midterm weight, with the weight written as a fraction (20% = 0.20).
Worked example
Current grade 82%, midterm worth 20%, target 80%: (80 − 82 × 0.80) ÷ 0.20 = 72% needed on the midterm.
How to use the midterm exam calculator
Enter your grade before the midterm
Use the grade from everything graded so far, excluding the midterm.
Enter the midterm’s weight
From the syllabus — for example “Midterm: 20%”.
Enter your target course grade
The percentage for the letter you want, like 90 for an A or 80 for a B.
Read the score you need
The calculator shows the minimum midterm score and flags a target that’s already secured or out of reach.
A midterm rarely decides the course
With a midterm worth 15–25%, most of your grade is still ahead of you. A weak midterm is recoverable; use the result here as a target, not a verdict.
Use the grade from before the midterm
If your gradebook already shows the midterm as a zero, your real “grade going in” is higher. Use the figure that excludes the midterm.
What a specific score would do
The “What if I score…” view shows the course grade that follows from any midterm score, so you can see the payoff of a few points either way.
