HOW IT WORKS

This term, by itself.

Semester GPA = this term’s quality points ÷ this term’s credit hours. It covers only the current term; your cumulative GPA then combines every term.

Worked example

Biology A (4 cr), Calculus B+ (4 cr), English A− (3 cr), History B (3 cr), Seminar A (1 cr): 53.3 quality points ÷ 15 credits = 3.55 for the semester.

How to use the semester gpa calculator

  1. Enter only this term’s courses

Leave out past terms — a semester GPA is just the current term.

  2. Add credits and grades

Use each course’s credit hours; set +/- and weighting to match your school.

  3. Read your term GPA

This is the GPA that lands on this semester’s report.

  4. Roll it into your cumulative GPA

Switch to the cumulative GPA calculator and add your prior GPA and credits.

Semester GPA vs cumulative GPA

Your semester (term) GPA reflects one term only. Your cumulative GPA is every term combined. A strong semester lifts your cumulative GPA, but by less as your total credits grow.

Why credits still matter within a term

Even in a single semester, a 4-credit course counts more than a 1-credit seminar. The calculator weights each grade by its credits rather than averaging the letters.

Dean’s list and probation

Many schools use term GPA — not cumulative — for Dean’s list or academic probation. Check the exact threshold your school uses; it’s usually a term figure.

A FEW THINGS YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING

Semester GPA Calculator questions

How do I calculate my semester GPA?
Multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them, and divide by the term’s total credits. The example above works out to 3.55.
What’s the difference between semester and cumulative GPA?
Semester GPA is one term; cumulative GPA is every term combined. Dean’s list usually uses the semester figure.
Does a bad semester ruin my GPA?
One term moves your cumulative GPA less when you already have many credits. Enter it in the cumulative calculator to see the actual effect.
Do all my courses count toward term GPA?
Usually every graded course that earns credit. Pass/fail courses typically don’t affect GPA — check your school’s policy.
