HOW IT WORKS

Letters and grade points, both ways.

A single course converts exactly: each letter has a fixed grade-point value on the 4.0 scale. A cumulative GPA converts only approximately to one letter, because it’s an average of many courses — the bands below are a guide, not an official rule.

Worked example

A course graded A− is worth 3.7 grade points. A cumulative GPA of 3.50 sits in the “A−/B+ average” band — strong, just below an A average.

How to use the gpa to letter grade

  1. Find the direction you need

Converting one course’s letter to points? Use the exact table. Converting an overall GPA to a rough letter? Use the band guide.

  2. Read the exact per-course values

    A = 4.0 down to F = 0.0, with +/- steps of 0.3–0.4.

  3. Use bands for a cumulative GPA

A 3.7+ GPA is roughly an A average; the bands below show each range.

  4. Compute your own GPA

Enter your courses to get the exact number, then read its band.

These bands are a guide. A cumulative GPA is an average, so it doesn’t map to one official letter — schools don’t convert GPA back to a single grade.

Percentages are a separate scale

A letter can also come from a percentage (90–100 = A, 80–89 = B, …), and the percentage-to-letter cutoffs are set by each course. See GPA vs percentage for how the two scales relate.

A FEW THINGS YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING

GPA to Letter Grade questions

What letter grade is a 3.7 GPA?
As a single course, 3.7 grade points is an A−. As a cumulative GPA, 3.7 is an A−/B+ average — strong, just under an A average.
What GPA is an A?
An A is 4.0 grade points per course. A roughly “all-A” cumulative GPA is about 3.85–4.0, allowing for the odd A−.
Is A+ a 4.0 or 4.3?
Most schools cap A+ at 4.0; some use 4.3. Check your transcript policy.
How do I turn my GPA into a percentage?
There’s no exact conversion — GPA and percentage are different scales with school-specific cutoffs. The GPA vs percentage guide explains why.
