How to calculate a weighted grade (with examples)
Weighted grade = sum of (category percentage × category weight) ÷ sum of weights. Step-by-step method, a three-category worked example, and the mistakes that throw the answer off.
A weighted grade gives each part of your course a fixed share of the result. Exams might be worth 50% no matter how many points they contain, while homework is 30% even if it has hundreds of points. Here is the method, by hand and in the calculator.
The four steps
Find each category’s percentage
Add the points you earned in the category, divide by the points possible, multiply by 100. Homework: 276 of 300 points = 92%.
Multiply by the category weight
Use the syllabus weight as a decimal. Homework 92 × 0.30 = 27.6.
Add the contributions
Homework 27.6 + quizzes (85 × 0.20 = 17.0) + exams (78 × 0.50 = 39.0) = 83.6.
Divide by the total weight you used
If every category has grades, the weights total 1.0 and the grade is 83.6%. If a category has no grades yet, divide by the weights of the categories that do.
Worked example
| Category | Earned / possible | Percent | Weight | Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Homework | 276 / 300 | 92.00% | 30% | 27.60 |
| Quizzes | 170 / 200 | 85.00% | 20% | 17.00 |
| Exams | 156 / 200 | 78.00% | 50% | 39.00 |
| Weighted grade | 100% | 83.60% |
When a category is empty
Say the exams haven’t happened yet. Your grade so far uses homework and quizzes only: (27.6 + 17.0) ÷ 0.50 = 89.2%. That number is real, but it only describes half of the course. Once the exams land at 78%, the result is 83.6%. MyGradePlan labels these two situations separately so you never mistake a half-course grade for a final one.
Common mistakes
- Averaging percentages inside a category. A 10-point quiz and a 100-point quiz are not equal. Add points first, then find the percentage.
- Using weights that don’t total 100%. Check the syllabus. A final projection needs the full 100%.
- Counting future work as zero. Leave it “Not graded yet” unless the instructor has recorded a zero.
- Forgetting drops and caps. Apply them inside the category before weighting.
