Points Grade Calculator

Add earned and possible points to get your current grade, keep missing and ungraded work separate, and find the average you need on remaining work.

Scores of 18/20 and 42/50 add up to 60/70, which is85.71%— not the 87.5% you get by averaging the two percentages.

UNDERSTAND YOUR RESULT

Every point brings you closer.

Current grade = included earned points ÷ included possible points × 100. Bonus points add to earned points only.

Worked example

Scores of 18/20 and 42/50 give 60/70 = 85.71%. Adding an ungraded 30-point assignment leaves the current result unchanged. Marking it missing gives 60/100 = 60%.

How to use the points grade calculator

  1. Enter each assignment’s points

Earned and possible, straight from your gradebook, such as 42 out of 50.

  2. Mark what hasn’t been graded

Future work stays “Not graded yet” so it doesn’t drag your grade down as a zero.

  3. Add the rules that apply

Extra credit, protected assignments and dropped scores are explicit settings.

  4. Check the average you still need

With every remaining assignment entered, the calculator shows the average required on the rest to hit your target.

Points are not an average of percentages

An assignment worth 100 points has more influence than an assignment worth 10 points. Add the earned points and possible points first. Simply averaging the percentages gives the wrong result when assignments have different point totals.

What average do you need next?

When every remaining possible point is known, target fraction × total possible points − already earned points gives the points still needed. Divide by remaining possible points for the required average. The simple target solver is disabled when drop policies or caps could change that calculation.

Use scenarios for additional rules

Extra credit, protected assignments, drops and caps are explicit settings. The scenario view calculates an outcome using your entered assumptions. It does not predict your performance or guarantee an institutional result.

A FEW THINGS YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING

Points Grade Calculator questions

How do I turn points into a percentage?
Divide the points you earned by the points possible and multiply by 100. 42 out of 50 is 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%. The percentage guide covers rounding and letter grades.
Does ungraded work count as zero?
Not here. “Not graded yet” is left out of your current grade. “Missing — counts as 0” adds the possible points with nothing earned. Read the difference.
How many points do I need to pass?
Target percentage × total possible points, minus what you already have. The passing-points guide shows an 800-point example.
