Open the calculatorWhat letter is that score?
First turn the score into a percentage: points earned ÷ points possible × 100. Then read the letter from your course’s scale. The standard US scale is A 90–100, B 80–89, C 70–79, D 60–69, F below 60; many schools add +/- bands.
Worked example
17 out of 20 is 17 ÷ 20 × 100 = 85%, a B on the standard scale (a B+ on a +/- scale). 42 out of 50 is 84% — also a B.
How to use the percentage to letter grade
Enter points earned and possible
Like 42 out of 50. The calculator shows the exact percentage.
Read the letter from the chart
Match your percentage to the table below — whole-letter or +/- depending on your course.
Check your course’s cutoffs
Some courses shift the lines (an A at 93, a pass at 70). Use your syllabus when it differs.
Combine several scores if needed
Add all earned and possible points before dividing — don’t average separate percentages.
Standard percentage-to-letter chart
| Percentage | Whole letter | With +/- |
|---|---|---|
| 93–100 | A | A |
| 90–92 | A | A− |
| 87–89 | B | B+ |
| 83–86 | B | B |
| 80–82 | B | B− |
| 77–79 | C | C+ |
| 73–76 | C | C |
| 70–72 | C | C− |
| 67–69 | D | D+ |
| 63–66 | D | D |
| 60–62 | D | D− |
| below 60 | F | F |
Cutoffs vary by school — some set an A at 94 or a pass at 70. Always check your syllabus when it differs from this.
A percentage is not automatically a letter
The percentage is exact; the letter depends on the scale your course uses. A 79% is a C on the standard scale but a C+ on a +/- scale, and a “B−” threshold in a course that starts B at 82. Read the percentage first, then apply your course’s lines.
Turning X out of Y into a letter
Divide the points you earned by the points possible, multiply by 100, then read the chart. 17/20 = 85% = B. 27/30 = 90% = A−. 45/50 = 90% = A−. The test score calculator does the division for you.
