How does dropping the lowest quiz affect your grade?
A drop policy removes your lowest score and its points from a category before the grade is calculated. See exactly how it changes your grade, with equal and unequal point examples.
A drop policy removes an eligible score and its possible points from a category before the category grade is calculated. Read the exact policy: “lowest percentage” and “drop whichever helps most” are different rules.
Equal-point quizzes
Three quizzes scored 6/10, 8/10 and 9/10 give 23/30 = 76.67%. Dropping the lowest percentage leaves 17/20 = 85%. In a weighted course, this changes the quiz category first, then the overall course result.
Different point totals need care
With 0/1, 50/100 and 100/100, dropping the lowest percentage removes 0/1 and gives 150/200 = 75%. Dropping 50/100 instead gives 100/101 = 99.01%. These are very different outcomes. Use MyGradePlan’s drop rule only when your syllabus uses lowest percentage.
What MyGradePlan supports
Open Grading rules to set the number of drops for a category. Scores marked “Protect from drops” remain. Ties are resolved by original entry order. At least one included assignment stays in each category. The calculation explains which scores were dropped.
Future scores can change which quiz drops
A low upcoming score can take the place of a currently dropped score. Scenario comparisons recalculate eligible drops, so they may not change in a straight line. Enter the full assignment plan and use assumptions that match the situation you want to explore.
Exam replacement, best-of-term rules and other policies may need a different calculation. Confirm unsupported cases with your instructor.
