MYGRADEPLAN GUIDE

How many points do I need to pass?

Required points = passing percentage × total possible points − points already earned. Worked 800-point example, what to do when the target is out of reach, and when you have already passed.

Points still needed =target % × total possible points − points already earned. In an 800-point course at 70%, with 420 earned, you need 140 of the remaining 200.

For a total-points course, start with the target percentage and the final number of possible points. This method assumes no drops or caps that alter the total.

Work backward from your goal

Required total points = target percentage ÷ 100 × total possible points. Subtract the points already earned. The result is how many points you still need.

An 800-point course

You want 70%, so you need 560 points in total. You have 420 points from 600 possible points so far, with 200 points remaining. You need 140 of the remaining 200 points, or a 70% average.

When a target cannot be reached

If the required remaining points exceed the available points, the target is beyond reach under a 100% maximum and the entered rules. Do not silently cap the answer at 100%. Ask about confirmed extra-credit options or test a different target.

When you have already earned enough

If you have already earned the required total, additional scores of zero may still meet that percentage target. This does not override attendance rules, mandatory assignments or minimum exam requirements.

Know what is still missing

The calculation is only as complete as the assignment list. Enter future assignments as “Not graded yet” and confirm the complete plan. MyGradePlan’s simple remaining-average solver is disabled when drops or caps could alter this calculation. Use the scenario workspace to test supported rules explicitly.

Questions about this

What percentage is passing?
It depends on the school. 60% (a D) is common in US high schools; many colleges require 70% (a C) for a course to count toward a major. See what counts as a passing grade.
What if my course is weighted, not points?
Use the weighted grade calculator. Points needed depend on which category the remaining work sits in.
