A semester grade is a weighted average: each category’s percentage times its share of the course, added up, divided by the weights in play. Points are added within a category first, so a 100-point exam counts more than a 10-point quiz.
Worked example
Homework is 40% of the grade and averages 90%; exams are 60% and average 80%. Semester grade = (90 × 40 + 80 × 60) ÷ 100 = 84%.
How to use the semester grade calculator
Enter your categories and weights
Copy them from the syllabus — Exams 50%, Quizzes 20%, Homework 30%, and so on.
Add each assignment’s points
Earned and possible, like 18 out of 20. Leave work you haven’t done as “Not graded yet”.
Add any grading rules
Dropped lowest quiz, extra credit and category caps are explicit settings.
See your semester grade, then plan
Compare lower, likely and higher outcomes on the work that’s left.
A semester grade is not a simple average
Averaging your category percentages only works if every category carries the same weight. When exams are worth 60% and homework 40%, you have to weight them — this calculator does that for you from the syllabus numbers.
Why your mid-semester number moves
Until a category has graded work, it’s left out and the remaining weights are rescaled. That’s why your grade can jump when the first exam posts: a new category becomes active and changes the mix.
Plan the rest of the term
Enter every remaining assignment as ungraded, then try a realistic score on each. The calculator shows the semester grade each scenario produces without touching your real grades.
