Is a 4.0 GPA good?

A 4.0 GPA is an A average. Excellent. Here’s what it means, how it compares to average, and what it takes to move it.

A 4.0 GPA isan A average.Excellent. That’s at or above the typical student (about 3.0 in high school and roughly 3.1–3.2 in college).

A 4.0 GPA is an A average on the standard 4.0 scale. Excellent. A 4.0 is essentially a straight-A average and sits at the top of the 4.0 scale. It is well above the national average (about 3.0 in high school and roughly 3.1–3.2 in college) and is competitive for selective admissions, scholarships and honors.

What a 4.0 GPA means

On the 4.0 scale, a 4.0 works out to an A average — straight A’s (every course a 4.0). GPA is credit-weighted, so a grade in a 4-credit course moves it more than the same grade in a 1-credit course. See how GPA is calculated.

Is a 4.0 GPA good?

For almost any goal this is a strong number. The only reason to "raise" it is to hold it there — one or two lower grades pull a high GPA down faster than you’d expect. "Good" is always relative to the goal: good standing, a specific major, transfer, a scholarship and selective admissions each set a different bar.

What a 4.0 is made of

A 4.0 is straight A’s (every course a 4.0). One course a full letter higher or lower shifts a 10-course GPA by about 0.1 — which is why it moves more slowly the more credits you’ve banked. If you’re checking this for your child: this is excellent work. The useful next step is protecting it — a single zero or a dropped-ball semester is what moves a GPA this high.

How to move a 4.0 GPA

A GPA changes fastest when you have fewer credits behind it, so acting earlier does more. Clear any missing work first, then put effort into your heaviest-credit courses.
