FREE GRADE CALCULATOR

Canvas Grade Calculator

Calculate your real Canvas grade from weighted assignment groups, check it against what Canvas shows, and try upcoming scores the way Canvas “What-If Grades” does.

With assignment groups of homework (30%) at 92% and exams (70%) at 83%, your Canvas grade is85.70%.

HOW IT WORKS

The grade Canvas is really showing you.

Canvas weights by assignment group: each group’s percentage times its group weight, added up, divided by the active weights. Ungraded work is skipped unless you treat it as a zero — which is exactly where Canvas and your expectations often differ.

Worked example

Homework group 30% averaging 92%, Exams group 70% averaging 83%: (92 × 30 + 83 × 70) ÷ 100 = 85.70%, matching Canvas when both groups have graded work.

How to use the canvas grade calculator

  1. Copy your assignment groups

In Canvas, each group (Homework, Exams, …) has a weight shown on the Grades page. Enter the groups and weights here.

  2. Enter your scores

Points earned and possible for each assignment. Leave future work “Not graded yet”, the way Canvas leaves it out.

  3. Test upcoming scores

Enter a hypothetical score to see your grade — the same idea as Canvas “What-If Grades”, but your real grades stay put.

  4. Compare to Canvas

If the numbers differ, a zero for ungraded work or a group weight is usually the reason.

How Canvas weights grades

When “Weight final grade based on assignment groups” is on, Canvas does a weighted average of your groups, not a raw points total. A 10-point quiz in a 20%-weighted group can matter more than a 100-point project in a 10%-weighted group.

Why your Canvas grade can be misleading

Canvas ignores unsubmitted work in the running total, so an early grade can look higher than it will end up. Mark future work as a zero to see the floor, or as a realistic score to see the likely result.

What-If Grades, without the risk

Canvas’s What-If feature lets you type scores to preview a grade. This calculator does the same and never writes anything back to Canvas or your instructor.

A FEW THINGS YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING

Canvas Grade Calculator questions

Why is my Canvas grade different from what I expected?
Most often because Canvas leaves ungraded work out of the total, or because assignment-group weights aren’t what you assumed. The grade-mismatch guide lists every cause.
How does Canvas calculate weighted grades?
It averages each assignment group, multiplies by the group’s weight, and divides by the active weights — the same method this calculator uses. See the weighted-grade guide.
Does ungraded work count as zero in Canvas?
Not in the running total — Canvas skips it. That’s why the grade can drop when zeros post. Enter future work as a zero here to see your floor.
Can I use What-If Grades without affecting my real grade?
Yes, both in Canvas and here — nothing you try is saved or sent to your instructor.
