PowerSchool averages each category, multiplies by the category’s weight, and divides by the weights in use. When a teacher uses category weighting, a small quiz in a heavy category can outweigh a big assignment in a light one.
Worked example
Homework category 45% at 91% and Tests category 55% at 83%: (91 × 45 + 83 × 55) ÷ 100 = 86.60%, matching PowerSchool when both categories have grades.

How PowerSchool weights categories
With category weighting on, each category counts for a set share of the grade no matter how many points it holds. That’s why your percentage can swing when the first test in a heavy category is entered.
Why the grade jumps mid-term
Before a category has any grades, PowerSchool leaves it out and rescales the rest. The first grade in a new category changes the mix — not a mistake, just the weighting at work.
Standards-based vs traditional
Some PowerSchool courses use standards-based grading rather than percentages. This calculator covers the traditional percentage-and-category setup; for standards-based grades, follow your teacher’s scale.
