HOW IT WORKS

Michigan State grades on a numeric scale, not letters.

Michigan State grades on a numeric 0.0–4.0 scale in half-point steps — a 3.5 is like an “AB,” a 2.5 like a “BC.” There are no letters and no plus/minus. The standard calculator above uses letter grades, so for an exact MSU GPA use the table and formula below (a course’s numeric grade is its grade points directly).

Worked example

A 4.0 (3 cr), a 3.5 (4 cr) and a 3.0 (3 cr): (4.0 × 3) + (3.5 × 4) + (3.0 × 3) = 12 + 14 + 9 = 35 quality points ÷ 10 credits = 3.50.

GPA at Michigan State: the formula

GPA = total quality points ÷ total credit hours, where each course’s quality points = its grade points (from the table above) × its credit hours. Courses worth more credits move your GPA more.

Honors and recognition

MSU uses GPA for the Dean’s List (set by each college, often around 3.5 for the term) and for graduation honors by cumulative GPA.
