Worked example
Two 3-credit courses graded A (4.00) and B (3.00): (4.00 + 3.00) × 3 ÷ 6 = 3.50. Add a B− (2.67) at 3 credits: 12 + 9 + 8.01 = 29.01 ÷ 9 = 3.22.
GPA at Penn State: the formula
GPA = total quality points ÷ total credit hours, where each course’s quality points = its grade points (from the table above) × its credit hours. Courses worth more credits move your GPA more.
Honors and recognition
Penn State uses the semester GPA for the Dean’s List (commonly a 3.5 on a minimum graded load) and cumulative GPA for graduation honors, set by the university.
