Open the calculatorThe University of Wisconsin–Madison uses a distinctive scale with AB and BC grades.
UW-Madison does not use plus/minus grades. Instead it has two in-between grades: AB = 3.5 (between A and B) and BC = 2.5 (between B and C). The standard calculator above can’t represent AB or BC, so for an exact UW GPA use the table and formula below — multiply each grade’s points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits.
UW-Madison grade-point scale
| Grade | Grade points |
|---|---|
| A | 4.0 |
| AB | 3.5 |
| B | 3.0 |
| BC | 2.5 |
| C | 2.0 |
| D | 1.0 |
| F | 0.0 |
Worked example
An A (4.0, 3 cr), an AB (3.5, 4 cr) and a BC (2.5, 3 cr): (4.0 × 3) + (3.5 × 4) + (2.5 × 3) = 12 + 14 + 7.5 = 33.5 quality points ÷ 10 credits = 3.35.
GPA at UW-Madison: the formula
GPA = total quality points ÷ total credit hours, where each course’s quality points = its grade points (from the table above) × its credit hours. Courses worth more credits move your GPA more.
Honors and recognition
UW-Madison’s Dean’s List is set by each school/college and typically needs around a 3.5+ semester GPA in a minimum number of graded credits. Latin honors at graduation use cumulative-GPA cutoffs set by your college.
